Orthopaedics

Established in 1967, the Department of Orthopaedics at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, is dedicated to providing excellent patient care and outstanding education in orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine. The department is committed to advancing knowledge related to the management of musculoskeletal disorders through the sub-specialty units renowned at National and International levels. We focus on patient care in each of these orthopedic subspecialties: spine surgery including corrections of scoliosis, knee arthroscopy & sports medicine, complex trauma with foot-ankle, shoulder surgery, complex trauma surgery and joint replacement and pelviacetabular trauma. We have, in addition, rehabilitation support by full-fledged physiotherapy and occupational therapy services. The artificial limb center with an inbuilt workshop and manufacturing facility provides comprehensive orthotic and prosthetic appliances.

Spine Surgery Unit

Sports injury Unit

  • Complex fracture fixation of shoulder and shoulder replacement; Hemi, Primary and reverse replacement 
  • All arthroscopic surgeries of shoulder: recurrent dislocations stabilization, rotator cuff repairs, spinoglenoid notch cyst decompression, acromioclavicular joint stabilization and reconstruction, latarjet procedure, tendon transfers, superior capsule reconstruction
  • Arthroscopic treatment of all conditions around the knee: Arthroscopic Ligament reconstruction of ACL & PCL, multi-ligament injuries and fixations of avulsion fractures, meniscal repairs, root repairs, recurrent dislocation of the patella 
  • Deformity correction of the knee: High tibial osteotomy, distal femur osteotomy 
  • Advanced cartilage surgeries, including Autologous Cartilage Implantation
  • Sports injuries of ankle: ligament stabilization, osteochondritis dessicans, etc
  • Hip arthroscopy: debridement, treatment of femoroacetabular impingement
  • Elbow arthroscopy: loose body removal, synovectomy, ligament stabilization, tennis elbow

Joint Replacement, Arthroscopy and Pelviacetabular Trauma Unit

  • Primary and revision joint replacement surgeries of hip, knee, elbow and shoulder
  • Tumour resection and limb reconstruction with megaprosthesis
  • Management of periprosthetic fracture and prosthetic joint infection
  • Fixation /replacement arthroplasty for fractures around the hip joint
  • Pelviacetabular and periarticular fracture fixation

HASTA CLINIC

“Hastha” is a project for children with Congenital hand anomalies or birth defects. It offers a special clinic for these children on Mondays, Tuesdays, Friday and Saturday. The clinic works to provide a comprehensive care in terms of diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, prosthetic support (3D printed prosthesis), Government aid and financial aid from the hospital.

Artificial Limb Center

The center offers comprehensive Orthotic and Prosthetic services. The high quality artificial limbs, or prosthetic devices have transformed many disabled people’s lives. 3D printed prosthesis is a new application which has been started
