The Department of Radiotherapy at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, was established way back in 1974, making it the second center in the state to provide oncology care. The department has been periodically updating its facility and is presently well equipped to deliver advanced and quality treatment for cancer. Other than facilities for Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) by VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Technique) technique and availability of advanced Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) with cone-beam CT, the department is the first and the only center in the Karavali belt to offer Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous conditions. The department also has High Dose Rate brachytherapy which can be used to treat selected tumors to high doses of radiation while reducing the risk of radiation damage to surrounding normal organs.
